Our church is a member of the MidAmerica Region of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). The UUA uses a system of “congregational polity”. This means that each of the nearly 1,000 member congregations governs itself. In addition, every UU community agrees to the use of the democratic process within our congregations as part of the fifth Principle.

UU Detroit keeps this commitment through our Constitution and our By-Laws (PDF). The members of the church approved each of these documents, and have amended them over time.

An elected Board of Trustees leads our congregation. Four named officers serve on the Board: the President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Aside from them, the Immediate Past President and two to four Trustees-at-Large are also members. The minister serves on the Board as well, but does not vote.

Each year in the month of May, the congregation holds an Annual Meeting. At this meeting, members of the church approve a budget, hear updates from all of the committees, and elect the Board. Other items may be voted on during the Annual Meeting if there is a need.
