UU Detroit is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). The UUA is the central organization for Unitarian Universalist (UU) religious movement in the United States. The UUA’s 1000+ member congregations are committed to the Seven Principles that include the worth of each person, the need for justice and compassion, and the right to choose one’s own beliefs.

UU Detroit, also referred as First Church, has been in its present location since 1916. Due to declining membership, the Church members could not sustain the expenses of the building. In 2011, the building was donated to East Michigan Environmental Action Council (EMEAC). We are now a proud member of the Cass Corridor Commons.

The Church is located in Midtown Detroit. As the only UU Church within the City of Detroit, we are concerned with the effects of racial and economic inequality, regional transportation, and access to quality education. We want to have members from all parts of the city, not just Midtown and Downtown.

Proudly, we are an official UUA Welcoming Congregation for members of the LGBTQ community. We are also involved in the “Black Lives Matter” movement. Our history includes involvement in the US Civil Rights movement. One of our late members, Viola Liuzzo, was instrumental to the beginnings of the Civil Rights movement.
